Can anyone rephrase this sentence (from game review):

I'm trying to fix Polish translation of this game and I'm 100% sure this sentence was not correctly translated. Still, even if I found meaning of "level playing field", I can't get all puzzles together to get a grasp on its general meaning :/ Last edited by bukimi; 20-09-2012 at 12:21 PM. |

"This game could have really held its own [i.e. be good enough compared to others] if the playing field had been a bit more level."
It's allowable to ellipt the word "if" in the cases that subjunctive is used, with "should" or "had": "Please let me know, if you should experience any problem," can be rephrased as "Please let me know, should you experience any problem." It usually sounds more formal than including "if" as usual. Still, a comma should be used at least: "This game could have really held its own, had the playing field been a bit more level."

I know about "if" ommission. Just had problems with figuring out relation between "held its own" and the rest of sentence.
So... Is the meaning similar to: "This game could be good compared to others, if difficulty was more balanced." I'm figuring out how to relate "level playing field" (equal chances) to a game. |

I don't think so. Without context the meaning is certainly unclear, but if you read the previous paragraph it seems to mean that the game could be considered good compared to games from three years earlier, which it resembled, but not at the time it was released.
We should take this to the translators board, we'll bore other people :P

Alien Rampage is on sale at GOG. Should there be a download on Abandonia? I thought that if a game is being sold it shouldn't be downloaded for free on Abandonia.

How is Alien Rampage not more well-known? It’s excellent! The art style, the action, the violence, the puzzle solving, tons of unique enemies, gameplay that keeps changing up the routine, and on and on. If it only had some kickass music to go along with it, and maybe a more fine-tuned camera with a higher frame rate, this would be in my all-time best list of DOS platformers.
