Infact, there were three red cards.
I guess one could say it wasn't tenderest of the matches.

Augh! two red cards and a tie of 1-1 in the US against Italy today! That was a brutal brutal game.
[/b]
That was indeed. But did you see Portugal against Iran? How Figo got a kick in his face? That HURT A LOT :wallbash: . How could those jerks not give a red card for that? Grrr...

Portugal win and make a very good game, and the brutal attack to the face of Figo, and the referee, did mark a fault, it´s smell to me we have the same referee that make a disater in the last world cup... :wallbash:

There were 2 on the US and one on Italy. However, the ref will probably not be seen again for the rest of the finals because of those calls (and several others). In terms of officiating the game was a complete disaster. It wasn't nearly as rough as the 3 red cards and countless yellow cards make it seem. The really infurating thing is that the ref in question was relieved from his position for the 2002 World Cup due to "officiating irregularities."

The Italian red card (the first of the game) was for a flagrant elbow to the face (which resulted in a noticable amount of blood). The ejection was justified. The first red card on the US came only a few minutes later on a late slide tackle. No warning, no yellow card; a direct red. The third red card was an automatic after a second yellow on another clean tackle only two minutes into the second half. There was, again, no warning and no justification. It's rather amazing the Americans held on as well as they did playing a man down against a fantastic Italian team for nearly the entire second half.

I don't even care to think about how many yellow cards were eventually issued and while the single red card issued against the Italian team was justified, most of the yellows were not. It was a poorly officiated game and it's a real shame that it had such an impact.

I think that De Rossi's red card was absolutely deserved, and not just that. He should be banned for at least two games because hit in the face was totally intentional.

On the other hand, first red card for USA (I think it was Mastroeni) wasn't justified. It shouldn't have been direct red card, but a yellow one instead. However, second red card for USA (Pope - second yellow) was OK. In my opinion, Pope deserved second yellow for that tackle.

I agree Pope didn't do a clean tackle, he might've been heading for the ball but he didn't touch it all...

Very poor referee. It's amazing that a player like De Rossi who's known for his fairplay committed such a bad foul. About the red cards to USA, the referee did apply the rule according to which a tackle foul from behind has to be punished with direct red. The rest of his officiating was quite crazy.

My favourites were Zambrotta for Italy and Keller for USA, he made some incredibly good saves.

It's the way television rights work, you get exclusive rights for one country that's why cabel systems must turn off or cramble other channels during the match...
The only exception I see are German channels ZDF and ARD which anyone who has Hot Bird satellite can watch...

Quite true. If I remember correctly, it was De Rossi who won Fair Play Trophy in Serie A because he scored a goal with his hand and admitted it to the referee who had already allowed the goal.
Of course the goal was disallowed later. :bleh:
