MANGA is just the Japanese word for comics. So it's any kind of comics (just named with a Japanese word for it).

I'm guessing the word comics became to commonplaced, so the readers were looking for a cooler word to use it (one that would sound less childish).

man ga = japanese words for = irresponsible pictures, after some dude made some woodcuts of octopuses doing things you dont want to know about (unless you class urutuksudoji as *erotica*) lead to the legislation banning the visual reproduction of genetalia, which is why on any (legal) japanese porno bound for the domestic market the genitals have that crazy blurring effect applied.

hentai = dirty old man. the word manga has come to be used to describe all the printed media, but the meaning is still irresponsible pictures. im not a major otaku, but i still like the stuff. this is the reosen i belive stan sakai doesnt like people refering to usaji yojimbo as manga, as the stories are morality tales and so he didnt like the label *irresponsible*being added to them.
