What's your opininion about it?
I know it's widely used in USA, but here in Europe people are quite ressiliant towards it. What do you think is it the food of the future, what's its impact on nature, state your opinion...

I have no problems with GM food and crops and think that they are the only way forward t oproduce better varities of crops to help the problem of world hunger, in particular the research into drought resistant crops. The thing that irritates me is when enviromental groups break into labs where GM crops are being tested and when asked why, they say it's because they haven't been tested!

Yeah I don't see what the big fuss is against GM foods. I know there is a risk to them if they aren't made right, but I'm sure if they release them as safe then they are alright.

theres a potential problem with putting stuff like scorpion genes into potatoes. if the genes pass into bacteria, or into other plants like weeds.. you could end up with a super weed, or some kind of crazy thing.
another potential risk is that they use a virus to change the dna.. so the virus itself might have unforseen problems. having said all that, there are bigger risks in the world, and the benefits of GM outweigh the risks as i see them. people have been selectively breeding and cross breeding crops for a long time.. and didnt cause too much trouble, apart from the whole thing with the bananas. |

I think there is both risks and benefits to gmo food, as long as proper testing is used and there is no hurry to put the product out onto the market without evaluating the potential possible risks, then it can be useful product, to be used.

Well I'll just give you some examples:
AGAINST: 1 During my stay in Texas I experianced it and here's what I can tell you. The day I walked into my room there was a shiny red apple in the fruit baske on the TV. It looked as if it were polished. Two weeks later that apple still looked as though somebody would come in and polish it every morning. I was sure it's made of wax or something and was used for decoration. It wasn't (I tested it with my pocket knife). It was mid February and I had fresh strawberies. Sorry to say they tasted like flour wraped in paper with some chalk added. They looked really nice, but the taste wasn't there. I'm not saying I'm against further testing and improvemants, but the final product should be something better then the original. Just growin fast doesn't mean a lot. FOR: People have always modifed things. There were always new breeds of crops, animals... It just wasn't done at such a level. There was no gene spicing in the lab. SOMETHING TO THINK about: Would this help fight the world hunger? It hasn't yet! There's more then enough food in the world as it is - it's just not distributed equally. Imagine - people in south-east Asia export huge amoungts of rice - while starving them selves. They are forced to sell rice to foregin countries, that already have too much food, yet they haven't enough. That's something that can't be changed simply by providing more food. Some governments don't care about people, they just want to export - so they do, regarthless of the probles involved. |
