Default Dos Box , Vista and Ultima 7

Well tried playing ultima 7 on dosbox (I have vista) and get an error message saying something like "Please disable extended memory manager before running ultima 7 look at your ultima7 reference guide for help with memory managers"

Thats not the only problem when I type in dos box sometimes everything goes black and im like Wtf

Plays games very choppy in fullscreen but ok in minimised mode GAWD.

Optimal Settings

- cycles: 15000 so the game is not too slow or too fast.
- no EMS: type 'ems=false' inside Dosbox to disable EMS

Alternatively, run DOSBOX.BAT inside the game's folder which will set Dosbox to the settings above.

Known Issues

Some things still go too fast or too slow regardless but this is due to the sensitive nature of the game I'm afraid.

There's an alternative to DOSBox and that's Exult which will let you run Ultima VII (part 1 & 2) in Windows, Mac OS, Linux, etc. You will no longer have the odd slow downs and speed-ups mentioned above with the added bonus that combat is slightly improved and you can run the game at higher resolutions!
ok I see now but still , dos box is choppy in vista and goes all black at times.

If you're using 0.73, ALWAYS set cycles to auto, it works perfectly.

And with the risk of sounding redundant - why not use the Exult engine?

I have cycles set to "max" on all my games and they work perfectly fine.

I'm running games from D-Fend Reloaded and I use Windows 7 64-bit, which is basically the same as Vista right?

First, for DOSbox, use a front end. I've always used D-Fend and it works great. To run Ultima VII in Windows, use Exult. Works great!
