Default Simtown error in Win 3.1 in Dosbox

Greetings Abandoneers

I'm running Windows 3.1 inside Dosbox 0.74 and when I play SimTown I get this error only when trying to build residential buildings (see attachment)

Anyone have a clue what I can do / tweak to make it work?

Thanks, Andy

Here's a thread I found on the vogons forum. It looks like there's precious little you can do unfortunately - but I hope it saves you a couple of hours if you don't bother using VirtualBox. There's an online version on archive.org, you could give it a try. I'd also try to find an old PC magazine that is period appropriate and check if their contemporary reviews have anything to say on the subject.

I didn't find any system requirements, but please try to setup DOSBox if it was an appropriate machine for the era you emulate if you haven't already - CPU speed, memory size, HDD, CD drive emulation, etc.

There's also a Win95 version of SimTown and even though 95 is difficult to setup it might be an alternative. Personally, I'd try VMware or VirtualBox to work with Win95.

Just my two cents. Best of luck to you in playing.

Hello Tracker!

Thank you for your thorough answer which indeed have saved me time
I'm going to give up starting it in dosbox and try and set up in VirtualBox instead. Thanks again!

No problems, glad I could help. I'd like to warn you however to try Windows 95, not Windows 3.1 in VirtualBox. I think the Vogons guys tried 3.1 in VB but it didn't run well either:

- Win 3.1 in VirtualBox is limited to 16 colors, this causes problems for the game
- Win 3.1 is unstable in VirtualBox

Windows 3.1 + PCem

PCem is specifically designed for running older operating systems. I've never tried Windows 3.x in it but I've tested MS-DOS 6.22 and Win98.

It's not quite as "user friendly" as something like Virtual Box.
