hmm, I have DOSBox 0.71 but haven't done anything with the configuration file, just downloaded from abandonia. Error reports:

error opening MISC/MDKFONT.FTI - check manual

In windows the screen goes black for a while as it changes resolution and then back again, no report of what is wrong.

(Split from 3xblah)

What is your mdk folder location and what is your DOSBox "mount" command?

From the game review
Important! Game needs to be extracted to c:mdk. If you extract it elsewhere, you have to manually edit mdk.cfg file and enter the directory it is residing in.

Note: Before my edit of my previous post, I suggested he should move the game folder to c:\dos, creating the path c:\dos\mdk. This differs from what the review says, but seems to work in this case.

true, it differs from the review, but the result is the same, doesn't it say in the rewiev that you should mount with c: ? If it does then it's the same thing.
