Source ports are cool and all, but it's not the original experience (except maybe Chocolate Doom).

Yeah, the only source port I'm using is... Doom95 I'm not into remakes.

Oh boy. No offense, but you two wouldn't last two minutes on the DOOMWorld Forums with that stance...

I don't care. I see it the other way around: most Internet folk would get kicked from my chat channel under 3 minutes. I'd say something is wrong with them.

To think I viewed the Western world as supporting individualism... If you dare to think independently you'll be called "uncool", "killjoy", "hater" or whatever is the latest slang.

Some people like enhancements, some don't. I'm not really decided either way, myself.

Is there a way to tell how many people have clicked the source port links on DOOM's info page ever since it opened?

Actually, I had a period of playing through source ports - mostly Doom Legacy which I think was the first source port of id Tech 1 I played and DEngine (used it to play Hexen a lot BTW). I wanted to check out the 3D models for Doom but couldn't afford to download a 20+ megs package (or maybe even 40+ Mb) back then. Later I downloaded a pack for Hexen but didn't like it - I believe 3D models don't look good in an originally 2.5D engine, this is why I don't like the High Resolution Pack for Duke Nukem 3D either. I'd rather prefer they did high-res sprites instead.

Just think of it... Doom got released 20 years ago...

MobyGames has "on this day" section, but such important anniversary is buried in info about some Japanese ports etc.

I was playing Doom 1 & 2 for the past weeks to celebrate this... it can still surprise or scare you if you can focus properly.

This year happened something I thought of as impossible, John Carmack left id Software. I guess the theory about 20-year cycles was not a lie after all . Currently awaiting news about Doom 4, but honestly nothing exciting has come out about it. I'm beginning to doubt id can pull out something amazing nowadays, as most of its properties have been handled by third-party devs in the past decade, while the main studio focused on the engine. RAGE featured great shooting mechanics and use of weaponry, but it's unbelievable how little content they could cram in over 20 gigs of information. The game ended too soon, and the main culprit is in my opinion the engine. Not much of a technological marvel, that.
