Hi Guys
My pc is taking ages to boot. Yes I checked for spyware adaware and viruses and defragmented. i have windows xp and was wondering what services does it really need loaded to have usb suport anti virus background task cd burned windows firewall and my ethernet broundband connection and the whole system still working. Thanks hope you can help.

Check out this guide that shows you what each of the services does. That way you can easily decide which are the ones you really need. k:

One way to improve speed is to use SpyBot to edit Startup programs. Remove everything that is not required to run.

Do a registry cleanup. Get more free HDD space (I found it makes a GIANT difference, actually)

It does not do you any good if you don't defragment the hard disks.

Another thing to keep in mind is AV software. If you don't have to run it all the time, then don't!

Also fixed size of page file, and one page file that is in one fragment do increase the speed. If you need instructions on how to create one piece page file, let me know, I might be able to explan you.

And remember that registry clean up can mess up some of your programs.

Thanks for the info i also finally uninstalled 2 games i never played and cleaned out my documents it has sped up slightly i am figureing out what services i need right now.

Yup, defragging can do you a whole world of good. Try adding some RAM to the computer, maybe. Also check the BIOS settings.

Finally, remember that PC's just slow down after a while. My current PC has sped up a fair bit after I ran a cleaning cycle on it (lots, lots of various methods to improve function), but now it slowed down back again and the methods I used earlier just don't work anymore. This includes multiple online and offline defrags, registry cleanup, uninstallation of software and numerous virus scans. Some cases are just hopeless.

Fragmentation? Pfft. My system is 99% fragmented and it runs without a hitch. Plus, it takes weeks to defragment <_<

Keeping startup programs to a minimium and free space to a maximium is a must. You can easily use 'msconfig' to check what runs and what doesn't. If you break something just go into Safe Mode and put it back :P
