The best game that comes to mind is the Suikoden series on PSX/PS2... It's a great feeling coming home to your bedroom in a HUGE castle after a hard days work

Suikoden is pretty good, it's just that the style of turn-based combat it uses is severly irritating after awhile (it goes too slow)

Those battle styles can get annoying if the game itself sucks, but Suikoden 2 is far from sucking.

There is another game where you have to defend your Town:
The Horde (available here @ abandonia.com)
You begin with some gold and can buy defence-items like traps or fences. Then "The Horde" is coming over your lands and you must defend your villagers and crops to get more money. After mostly 4 Seasons you will change your location. Later on you can hire knights and archers and buy better equipment.

Horde is one of my favourites but you don't have a base, so to speak...

I'm guessing what type of base you are after. X-COM games have bases... but I like games where a base is a place you can go to rest, store items, etc. in an Adventure/RPG game.
