except for the research it sounds somewhat like stellar conflict (havnt found that game anywhere yet), maybe its a sequal?

This is a long shot but.. Imperium Galactica comes to mind. It did have videos during the battle
 Also it's predecessor Reunion.

Space rockets rule
 I don't know what this is, but if you have a joystick (go and get an analogue one, if you don't) and get Wing Commander, Privateer and X-Wing/Tie Fighter. They are the only games you need for space battle action. For a more strategic space battle (dont play Sins - it's a bit dull) you have to play Space Rogue and Elite. If you've never played them, go and take 24 hours of hard-core space adventure pennance, my boy!!!
