I use an M class 1.5 laptop to play DOS games now. But I use to have a pentium 200 mhz which was awesome for older games though kept breaking down as it was around ten years old. It took a bit of configuring with DOS mouse and sound drivers, but it always gave good results once the game was running. The trouble with old, old pentiums is that they're unreliable which kind of negates the good gaming results. Dosbox and VDM sound are so good that you might as well use a modern computer and have more stability.

I had a 90 something pentium then a 233 pentium II before I discovered dos-box for my old games. It does not matter the type of computer you have, but the operating system on that computer.

I'm going to get both, actually. A 486 for pure DOS purposes, Pentium for Windows 98 (some games have trouble running in Xp...)

Pentunum because it would be faster so I could run win 95 or 98.

I'd say pentium with a dual-boot for both DOS and Win98.

486 with lot's of RAM for older ones and pentium (up to 2000mhz) for later ones and network play (such as hexen).

I actually have 486 DX 80 mhz with 32 BM ram and 1MB graphics card. most dos games can be played there. the only one i can only play there (because i has FAT 16 ) is Terra Nova. One of the best games in my opinion, but lacks coop play and could use some graphics improvement nowadays. but otherwise good story, good movies, good missions, good armor and controls... wish i had a pentium with FAT 16 to run it on.

otherwise my computer is celeron 1400 mhz with 128MB graphics and 320 MB RAM. i play most of games on that one nowadays, including dos (although some run too fast - such as X-COM).
