OK,

I've read through the "manual" that is linked to from this thread, but I still can't figure out a couple of things:

1. Can I get salvage from amateur night at the Arena?

2. How do I win amateur night? I have destroyed three cars (they're "out of commission"), can't find any more opponents, but when I leave the arena, I get the message that I lost - too bad, maybe next time etc.

Can anyone explain the above to me?

Many thanks.

If I remember right - and it's been a whlie since I've played this last - there's at least 5 cars you have to destroy. Perhaps you're not driving enough of the arena to find the last couple opponents. I always drive the arena in a counterclockwise circle. You cannot get salvage from amateur nights.

Also, the quickest way to dial up your cash to start with? Don't buy a car. Go get on the bus to Philadelphia, then to Atlantic City. Gamble at the Poker tables until you have about 850,000 in cash. More than that will see your funds get slapped down by the IRS the instant you leave the Casino (I think it's 900k+, but I could be wrong. 850k should be safe if memory serves). Then get back on the bus to New York and go experiment with car builds, which you can then take into the arena or go hunting bandits outside town to build your prestige so you can then do AADA courier runs or other missions. Oh, and don't forget to buy some body armor!

You may need to restart a couple times if the poker tables go badly, but it usually works without requiring too much time.

Very well explained, Zwischy! You neglected one tiny detail: Gold Cross. This lot will create a clone of you for a fee and keep updating it (for further fees) as you gain skills. This permits you a 'second chance' if you do crash & burn.

Yes, you can always return to a saved game, but why not keep the game's immersion going? With close to a million, you can surely afford a GC 'insurance policy'.

Thanks for all the thoughtful discussion here, and here's hoping EA (I'll never call it "Electronic Arts" - that company actually respected its creative staff, but is sadly LONG gone ) slip up and actually allow Mr. Jackson some leeway with the comp.game rights to his creation!

concerning the salvaging: nope, can't do it during amateur night.

beating amateur night: there are five cars. cudgeling my memory yields the following positions for them: one at 4'o'clock, one at 3'o'clock, one at 12'o'clock, one at 10'o'clock, and one at 8'o'clock. i usually go around them counter clockwise in the order i just listed, and then leave the arena out the top exit near 11'o'clock.

good luck! oh, and if you lose a couple fights now and again, your reputation score will drop allowing you to play amateur night longer. but once your cash exceeds a certain amount they still refuse you admittance.

Hey, guys...new to posting on this board, but want to give you some information about another good game sort of like Autoduel.

If any of you have Operation Flashpoint, there is a mod called CarWars (same name as Steve Jackson's RPG this is based on) where in a campaign mode you play as Mad Max for the most part, but it doesn't totally follow the life of him.

Also included is a special mission where you can save at any time, and as you kill the enemies in the level, it raises xp that you use to buy different vehicles and crew members from a list that pops up when you use the Interceptor.

Look up CarWars for Flashpoint to see more, a lot of fun. Just can't modify the cars urself.

Also, I just finished watching Death Race, and if you are a car combat fan, it's a pretty sweet movie.

How do you return to a saved game? If I die, the saved driver is gone when I go to the screen. Does anyone have any tricks that allow me to clone saves or something so I don't have to start over if I make a mistake and get killed? I love the game, but the startup phase is just brutal.

Post What's the ultimate goal?

I played this game A LOT back in high school but now I just don't have the time to invest hours and hours into it.

Please, will someone tell me if the game truly had an "ultimate goal" and if so what was it?

From what I've been able to find out about the game, there is a way to get to the final mission. You have to build up a high rating in combat or by completing courier missions to qualify, and you won't have to complete some of the courier missions. I wanted to use spoiler blocks, but they don't seem to work for me.

If you do qualify, the FBI sends you to an abandoned building (they tell you where) and gives you a password to give to them. After giving the password to them, you get the final mission. The program erases all of your clones at this point, so you must back up your save game, and don't enter any bars or truck stops on the way to the final destination.

Post Autoduel started it... Darkwind Perfected it

I played this game to death when I had it on my Commodore 64. I'd spend hours at a time fighting in the arenas. The roads were always really dangerous to me, and I had trouble getting from city to city but when I did, it was to the next Arena event I qualified for I'd go.

I've seen alot of posts in here saying "I wish they'd remake this" or "They should do an updated version!". Folks, it's been done.... And it's been done WELL..

I suggest you head to http://www.dark-wind.com/ and check out Darkwind! It's what Autoduel could have been if the technology were available then. The creators of Darkwind know all about Autoduel, Car Wars and all the other Cars-With-Guns games and they've created what I believe to be the best Car Wars game online. It's multiplayer, looks great and plays well. It has a bit of a steep learning curve, but once you get the hang of the physics and the turn-based control mechanism, you won't be able to stop

It's an option-to-pay game... You don't HAVE to pay for a subscription if you don't want to, but there are some limits in place for non-subscribers (i.e. You can't go out into the wilderness; you can only do Arena Combats, Deathraces, and Races) but if that's what your after, then that's what you'll enjoy!

I think anyone that loved Autoduel will love Darkwind even more. If you DO decide to subscribe, you are given an option to put in a player ID number as the person who sent you there in the first place. Mine is 8384 and if you do decide Darkwind is worth paying for, please place that number in as your referral. (And no, this isn't a troll for some kind of pyramid scheme, Darkwind is well worth playing and we players try to get the word out there when we can )

You can find me and my friend on there as Loendal and Felimed (My gang is the Big C Rollers, his is Mandelbots). I'll be glad to help you learn the ropes.
