Post Neverwinter Nights '91

Okay, so where do I begin...? I read somewhere that there used to be a game called Neverwinter Nights, and it was one of the first MMOs ever - it was played on an american network called AOL. It ran for a few years, then it disappeared without a trace - that was more than a decade ago. So, my question is, which status that game currently is in? Could it be considered abandonware, or is it protected? I know being a multiplayer thing, the server and client files are required to play, and they might fall under different rules, but still, seeing the revival of Imagination Network I thought "Why don't we try to preserve another classic?". I haven't tried INN yet, but I'm planning to - I'm really looking forward to a good ol' dungeon crawling party, but unfortunately I've got no party to party with...
I've written here because I have no idea which category this "open-letter-to-folks" can be sorted to, it's not really a request because I'm sure it isn't possible to seize that gem anytime now, but it's neither a game most of us have played to be talked about in the multiplayer or discussion section. If anyone knows anything about that something called NWN, but let me remind you again, I'm talking about the one which was written 1991, then please share it with me here.

Neverwinter Nights (AOL game)

You can see some more info about the game (with screenshots) on Moby Games.
You can also download a somewhat cut-down, offline version of Neverwinter Nights here and here (two posts down).

@mods please remove the link if it's decided to be inappropriate.

Thank you very much^^ I tried it out, and it's quite good. The only problem is, that it is still in an experimental state, but still it was a very insightful experience.
