I never played these, but I heard they were good enough, both strategies:

Glest
The Battle For Wesnoth

Battle For Wesnoth is great. It's also very challenging.

Indie = independent, games that weren't made by big companies but by a group of friends.
It applies to freeware (Glest, Wesnoth) as to those for money (World of Goo, Mount & Blade).

There are many good freewares and indies. This is good for the freedom of unit creation and nice explosions

but it is hell when trying to command flying units <_< ...

Doom: Fall of Mars
Doom reimagined in a diablo-esque fashion. Pretty nice, altough the current beta is still bugged.

I already have Battles for Wesnoth, its pretty sweet, even better since its so easily modded it seems

and Ima check into Doom Fall of Mars, too. Looks pretty interesting. My fav part of the video on its homepage? Into the house into a heartbeat, the song from 28 days later

I found another game: Botango, though I cant seem to find its homepage :\ anyways, serach it up
