Depends on the type of games - if you want originality and innovation then freeware and mods are the way forward, but if you want solid, well-produced games with larger communities (in most cases) and support then buying games is ok. My favourite methods would be downloading mods (look at some of the stuff that's been done with the UT2004 engine - Air Buccaneers, Alien Swarm, Red Orchestra - for good examples) and buying budget games. But then I'm a fan of freeware (hence why I like AR so much )

The best way to obtain games is to buy them. Even old games.
Of course, Abandonia offer old DOS games for free, but the aim of Abandonware is to preserve the games so they don't disapear. If the makers decide to sell it again Abandonia will gladly remove the game from the download list because the goal will be reached and the game won't fall into obsolescence. |

Return Of The Phantom is a classic example. I would love to buy this game, but the makers of the game won't sell it, never seen it on ebay, and can't download it. |

If they're good and commercial (and not too old), buying them.
If they're freeware, downloading them. If you can, make them (and share your creation free). |

If possible, I always try to buy games. Because that means I own it!
If not possible to buy, and game is abandoned, download. and if neither of those work.. then too bad

When I have the CASH and I see a game that worths my precious money I BUY IT !
But when I don't have the CASH and I want a game, I download it, or borrow it from friends. |
