That totally depends on what you want to do.

For a stand alone application, you can use C (c++, c# or plain C) or Java. Most people may tell you c++ is an hardcore choice but then again it depends on the nature of your project.

PHP, ASP, Perl and python are mainly used in webbased applications.

For starters I recommend java or python

Anyone ever tried ASSEMBLER or ML on a PC?
I really wonder if the benefits of speed and codesize were still an argument for using it on let's say a 4Mhz XT, but on even older computers it definitely was - and it was a fun and easy way of programming...
