I would agree partially with the statements Johnson made there. For computer games he might be quite right for some genres. Thanks to Sierra's older parser-adventures (KQ1 etc.) my english vocabulary was greatly improved and made lessons at school quite easy for me. I would not say that Sierra taught me English, but they helped a lot
Some others like trading simulations and strategy games formed my life, as I believe they had some influence to my job preferences nowadays. But sometimes I wonder, if today's games have the same effects. Thinking of the widely beloved FPS, I can't really imagine these games can do something good (except improving the mouse hand's reflexes and lowering the violence barrier). They can be fun, however. |

That's actually how I learned English too. Those Ultimas had a lot of dialogue...

Well, FPSs (good ones at least) provide plenty of opportunities for lateral thinking, and certainly improve hand-eye coordination and reflexes, as well as problem-solving skills and often team skills, communication and cooperation, and T5H has a good point - getting involved in modding or mapping for something like UT2k4 or HL will help your skillbase. It also helps you appreciate the best bits of other people's work (for instance, when I play a new UT2k4 map now that I've mapped a bit myself I'll be looking at the map in terms of technicalities as much as in terms of gameplay).

Heck yeah, games have many opportunities to help out in life, rpg's are awsome for learning, because of the large amount of dialogue there is in those games, and I agree with the statement on FPS, they really provide that opportunity, especially when your online, playing against others, the tension rises.

Agreed... I think certain genres allow different styles of learning. Like Adventures and RPG's allow you to learn you english better due to the amount of writing, and FPS increasing hand eye coodination. Puzzle games help increase lateral thinking and problem solving.
So yeah games can be educational. I remember learning alot of things from the old sierra games. |

I recomend chess as ultimate strategy game.
But civ works also fine, and you'll learn something about history.... Same with AOE. |
