I used to do pure command line, but after I got LOTS of games and stuff, the folders would scroll off the top of the screen, and when I couldn't see the folder, I wouldn't play the game, because I would forget about it

Well. Quickmenu 3 can be customized with a great deal.
Even the shareware version.
And finding a working serial only takes the right google search.
