Hey, I'm big into scary games and was hoping for some recommendations. It can be either new or old, although I'd like it to have at least VGA graphics, below that and I just can't get sucked in. To save repeats, I'll list some of the ones I have already played.

Ones I've played:

7th Guest
Aliens v. Predator series
Alone In The Dark (original)
Blood
Bloodrayne (little scary)
Clive Barker's Undying
Cold Fear
Diablo (I don't think 2 is scary)
Doom 3
FEAR
I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream (not scary, but really dark)
Laura Bow 2: The Dagger of Amon Ra
Martian Gothic: Unification
Nocturne
Phantasmagoria
Phantasmagoria 2
Resident Evil 1-3
Sanitarium
Shadow Man
Silent Hill series
The Suffering
System Shock 2
The Thing
Vampire the Masquerade Redemption/Bloodlines (not that scary, but hey, vampires)

Ones I plan to play:

The Black Mirror
Blair Witch series
Condemned: Criminal Origins
Call of Cthulhu: Shadow of the Comet
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth
Dark Seed
Legacy - The Realms of Terror
Obscure
Realms of the Haunting

Waxworks and the other two of those Elvira series. They are not that scary, but try telling that to me some 14 or 15 years ago... :bleh:

Haven't tried this new freeware Penumbra (http://penumbragame.com/) since my video card is not good enough to run it, but some say it's scary. Don't take my word for it, though, but you can try it yourself since it is freeware anyway.

Check out:

5 Days a Stranger
7 Days a Skeptic
Trilby's Notes
Enclosure

They're all on Abandonia, except Trilby's Notes is on Reloaded... they got good atmosphere.

By recommending once again the first three games that Scarecrow mentioned, I'd like to add Veil of darkness.

Just mentioning: That Gabriel Knight werewolf story really scared the sh*t out of me Being hunted by a werewolf when you're tired, it's dark outside and you would leave the game if you could, is nerve straining.

Rabadi: thanks, I'll check out Penumbra. And yeah, I saw some the other threads, which is why I emphasized scary because some games like Monster Bash aren't scary, but are technically horror.

Scarecrow/ Icewolf: thanks, I haven't heard of any of these

atasha: I played Phantasmagoria on XP without much trouble if I remember. I didn't do anything very elaborate, I just remember that only one method worked. I think I did it via DosBOX and used Alcohol 120% to switch ISO images. Just make sure you have autorun disabled in Windows, I think the autoplay might have locked up my system until I forcefully shut it down. I don't remember this stuff exactly, but if you want real hell try getting Phantasmagoria 2 to run in XP. I CANNOT do it, I've tried everything short of VMware. If you can get that working, I'll go back and give you detailed step-by-step instructions how to run 1 in XP.

Mighty Midget: Yeah, I've actually played Gabriel Knight 1-2, but they didn't strike me as scary, I guess I'm too desensitized.

Does that mean you just never heard about them? Or that you need to know where to find them?
