No, my PC is brand new. I have no idea why it's lagging in this set as opposed to that prologue set. I'll have to figure that out.
I don't know why my video is darker either, the game is brighter, but my video comes out darker.
No there are no settings for subtitles in the FMVs

checked out the german version of the PSX-Game.

The Intro is black/white. Instead of the 3 corpse showed in saibot intro they only show some newspaper. any Blood and gore is cut off. (Prologue Part 1 1:25-1:40)

Its german subtitle of which the PC-Version is missing. (big Fail i say)

and another thing: the cutscene with the Zombie eating a corpse isnt show in saibot Video only a black screen. (Prologue Part 2 2:22)

will comprse the DC-Version another time. ^^

It only showed black in my video because fraps won't record the cinematics. The full cinematic shows the zombie from behind and then kenneth's half eaten head falls to the ground (hence the dramatic music stab) and then the zombie turns around.
All PS1 versions of RE1 have the intro cinematic in black and white and the corpse is replaced with newspaper clippings.
I don't think subtitles are a fail in the game's part at all.

well, just checked RE - DC now and it is just like your PC-Version: in Color and uncut. beatiful bloody.

For me its a big Fail if i cant read what is said in Game. Point.

No, I have director's cut and it's black and white and censored. The Japanese version may be that way, but the American version is not. Now that I'm back home I am going to post a quick video about that hidden room... some time... soon...ish.
If you can hear things, then what's the point in reading them?

The American version dont interest me if i have the German Version and IT have COLOR and is UNCUT.

Yeah, Americans are ***** like that with our censorship. People have issues with everything in this country.
True, if you're deaf then it does SUCK HARDCORE BALLS TO THE WALL, but so long as I have my hearing I'm good to go.
