You know, if the game is similar, but has less colors, chances are you were just playing it in CGA. Many of these old games could be played in either CGA, EGA, or VGA because noe everyone had a computer that could handle 256 simultanious colors. They may be what you're looking for.

I am aware of that. and I did have a computer that could handle 256 colors (12 or 16 bit colors).
however I'm still at loss as to what "they" refered to... |
