Ok, my brother has sent an e-mail to my mom (in NY) requesting an upgrade in our PC. Now all my mom has to do is to estimate how much that will cost, give us the money then we will be the one to go to PC Express and have it custom-made (only the CPU)
Specs of old PC: 1. Intel Pentium 4 2.0 Ghz - Processor 2. 256 MB of RAM 3. Nvidia GeForce 2 MX 400 with 64MB video memory 4. 40 GB HD (with 4.8 GB of it occupied by System Restore Information) 5. American Megatrends Motherboard 6. WINXP Service Pack 2 Upgrade: 1. Either a Pentium 4 2.5-2.8GHz processor or a Dual-Core with 2 CPU Fans 2. 1GB RAM 3. Nvidia GeForce 6800 Ultra - GeForce 7800 4. 80GB HD or higher 5. WINXP Service Pack 2 Which is a good motherboard for you? I only need to know if this is a good choice...

About two weeks ago I've bought this kind of a machine, and I'm really glad:
1. Core 2 Duo E4300, 2*1,8 Ghz (only one CPU fan - why do You need two?) 2. 1GB RAM (soon 2GB will be necessary) 3. integrated (waiting for another income - 7xxx is the lowest I recommend) 4. 250GB SATA-II (I like it big) 5. WinXP 6. Gigabyte GA-945GZM-S2 (Probably you can choose different model, I needed integrated graphics to cut the costs)

Should i be honest;
A P4 2.5 is not much to get excited over... I have a 3,2 GHz P4 HT with 512 MB (bottleneck, i know) RAM and a total of 500 GB drives (200 and 300). I'm concidering getting a new, as this is starting to feel slow, compared to my new laptop with the AMD Dual-core-thingy... Also i'm annoind I can't fit more then 2 harddrives in there due to the designe, not can i fit a controller card either.... If i was you, I would get either a complertly new machine and reuse the parts from the old (drive and XP basicly) and go from there, or atleast get the dual-core. I Bet there are many nice "store-bought" machines under 1k$ that are just as good... Get a fullsize tower where you can fit alot of stuff inside, and that has good circulation for the air. just my 0.05€

dont you need a motherboard with a different socket for dual core? then you would need completely new rams (i guess you have DDR1 your older MB) and probably also HDD with different cable
btw i would recommend you 2dual 512 instead of 1 1gb ram

there is one AsRock motherboard which can work with EVERYTHING
The chipset user is VIA, and it has DDR1 and DDR2 slots, also Graphics could be AGP and PCI-E. Supported processors since Celeron to Dual Core ... That is a strange one

Currently Core2 and QuadCore are the best processors available - AMD is one step behind.

so mine with single core is actually faster than yours, but yours can handle more operations - i.e. you can run server and play games at same time. i checked the tests online and well i decided to get single core because it was cheaper and good enough. plus the speed is good. why is AMD one step behind? as i see it they are like a few tens of EUR lower, but still good enough to handle all my needs. yah AsRock does seem to make interesting boards. I installed two of those in my computers. both i used AGP for graphics. one had an old ATI VIVO card so i had to use AGP in second case i used it just cause i think it was good enough for what i need and it was cheap.
