Hi there found the 1.05 patch for this game fixes qite a few things:

Bug Fixes:
=========
While Virgin Games intends to provide 100% pure entertainment, Murphy's
Law (what can go wrong WILL go wrong) sometimes prevails, resulting in
the type of undesirable program behavior that most software companies
won't admit exists.

Unlike these others, Virgin Games is ready to admit that some problems
were discovered in version 1.00 and happy to announce that each one has
been addressed in version 1.50 and that the current product is (to the
best of our knowledge) exactly as originally intended.

We wish to thank all of the version 1.00 customers who contributed "bug"
reports, with detailed information. We have addressed those reports as
follows (maybe you'll recognize yours):

o The player may now pay to get out of jail during a computer player's
turn.

o The game prevents players from buying buildings during another
player's turn (between rolls if the player rolled doubles).

o Problems which resulted in graphic fragments being left on the screen
have been fixed.

o If the player gets an "Advance to Go" card while the $400 bonus is
activated for landing on GO, the player will receive $400 instead of
$600.

o If the player trades a large number of properties to another player all
at once, the program will no longer run out of memory and cease normal
operation.

o Problems involving the rolling of doubles have been fixed, including:
improper behavior when player bankrupts while rolling doubles, when
rolling doubles after rolling to get out of Jail,

o Problems involving multi-player functions (pay $50 to each player) have
been fixed.

o Program now correctly reports property names in history for activity on
Tennessee and New York.

The following features have been added in version 1.5:

o The program has been rewritten to provide faster game animation
on slow machines. This optimization does not affect token animation
which can be set to varying speeds using the Animation options menu.

o There is an option to display "Mortgaged" stripes on the board
properties. This is a handy way to let everyone (including the
owner) know which properties are currently mortgaged.

o New option allows players to view all currently unowned properties.

o The rules for Monopoly allow two or more players to contend for
houses if the bank cannot satisfy the current demand. These situations
are resolved with the house auction, in which players bid for houses
under dispute.

The bank display window will now show an equation to represent
the current number of houses during a turn in which houses are bought
or sold. This allows the player to see both the number of total houses
which could be auctioned in the event of a conflict and the number of
remaining houses which could be purchased without conflict.

This equation is (total remaining houses) + or - (houses bought
or sold this turn) = (total houses which can be bought this turn
without generating a house auction). A negative total means a house
auction will be commenced once a player rolls the dice.

o The following messages were added to the game history to better
document gameplay: game start-up options, building auctions, and
forced building sales.

o A new ending sequence has been added, allowing the player the
following options: Play again, Quit, and Gloat.

o If Gloat is selected at the end of the game, the screen is left
intact so that a player may save the game history to a text file
or save the screen display to an .LBM bit-map graphics file.

o The Title Deed window can be closed by double-clicking on its
respective space on the board.

o Game now allows player to open a Title Deed window on top of an
auction window.

Hm, I always thought the controls were awkward / clumsy + the layout not really clear in terms of ownership of squares and such.

I was looking for version 1.5 (the links above don't work anymore, but what I found instead was a 1989 version of monopoly which just happen to solve the problem of ownership in a quite pleasant way, by means of laying the a color ribbon on the game board with the player's color :smurf: . It'd be a good suggestion for an upgrade, if it wasn't abandonware

Take a look at it:
ftp://ftp.funet.fi/pub/msdos/games/board/monopvga.zip

But, of course, you can always click on the topmost player and highlight the squares of that player. It makes the game much less confusing.

You need to run the setup file in dosbox to configure the sound.

Thumbs up The best version of Monopoly yet!

I've bought owned and played many different versions of Monopoly for PC... but this one is the best by far. Sure, doesn't have the eye-candy of the newer incarnations, but has a lot more features and better gameplay IMHO.

I have "Monopoly 3" (US and UK editions), "Monopoly by Parker Brothers" (dist. by gameHouse), "Monopoly CD" (by Westwood), as well as the Windows 3.x version of Monopoly Deluxe...

Monopoly Deluxe for DOS by far beat's 'em all. Hell, the WinDoZe version of the same game (M.D.) *LACKS* features that the DOS version has! :duh:

Anyhow, two thumbs up, and a blast to play in DOSBox with DOSBox's "Turbo Mode" enabled
