It's not for DOS but Audiosurf is a pretty innovative game in it's own right.

Still, it's DOS games I'm looking for, anyway. :>

Also, what are some games - for DOS - that still stands out after all this time? Games that do not have a hundred clones, but perhaps should have?

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Loom yet.

There is no inventory... at all! You use music to get through the game and solve puzzles.

Dune 2 I believe was the first Real Time Strategy game.

War Wind was a game that wasn't well received because of its insane difficulty, but was the first Real Time Strategy game that didn't have the various playable sides as identical, or near identical clones of each other.

Starflight was one of the first Non-Linear RPGs. Even though you don't see it, there is a lot that is happening around the galaxy you are in, stars going supernova, aliens and ships moving from place to place, and planets that move during their orbit of a star.

DOS Games that have stood the test of time and should have been cloned?

X-COM UFO Defense comes to mind. Aside from X-COM Apocalypse, there was little that followed in its footsteps; although being a game that came in under everyone's radar when it was released didn't help. People still play it to this day, and there are still people who keep dedicated websites for the X-COM games.
As I have said before, it sits on every official "Best Games of All Time" lists, and the people over at Steam have converted the X-COM trilogy into Windows XP and Vista compatible downloads for only $5 each.
The games that came closest to matching the tactical combat part of the X-COM trilogy are Silent Storm and Silent Storm Sentinels, which include squad based tactics and fully destroyable terrain.

Master of Orion is another game that is still a great game today. Simple to learn, accessible to casual gamers, and removes the Micromanaging of your far flung Empire that was the one drawback of games like Civilization. No one has been able to match Master of Orion in how it plays or what drew people in. Even its squeals failed to live up to the original.

That looks very interesting. Thank you.

EDIT: Woot! That, I did NOT expect. It's actually on here.

I always end up saying... Star Control II

It draws heavily on Starflight but there's more to it. And of course even more unique (though I like the sequel best) is Star Control.

And that reminds me of Archon.

@dkw:

Dune 2 is excellent (which is an opinion my signature has stated by itself already).

Never heard of War Wind. Shall check it out.

Starflight is seems awesome. I'll have to play it again (& more).

X-COM UFO Defense is, indeed, a great one.

Master of Orion... I've checked its page out many times, but not downloaded it. I did so now, though. Hopefully I'll enjoy it!

@Japo: Hm... Gonna have to try that one out as well.

War Wind isn't that great, but some of the game concepts were unique.
I wouldn't recommend it to a casual gamer because it is almost impossible to beat.
I only mentioned it because its game features were unique, and created the "non-clone" but balanced sides, and didn't use the Rock Paper Scissors method for balance.
You could call it a "spiritual" predecessor to Starcraft by Blizzard.
