I suggest Freelancer. It has lots of mods, and is phenomenal in multi-player

It's also fairly open-ended in that it doesn't force you to advance at a particular pace, although eventually the plot will be somewhat linear. There's not a lot of worlds to explore though if you're into that sort of thing.
Whoa. That game looks very interesting, and I believe it's almost exactly what I was looking for. But I'll stop my words from flowing out before I try it, though.

Oh, and plus points for arcade games in bars.

Thank you!

EDIT: Hmmph... I've never had this much trouble with the controls in a game... ever. It took me a few minutes to get the ship straight after I had started spinning... Uncontrollably. Very frustrating.

I suppose I'll get used to it, though.

You can stop spinning at any time by pressing the middle button (i.e. 5 on the keypad, or S if you're using the keyboard for controls). By the way, all the references, manual, etc. are available online.

By the way, if you have any questions about Space Rogue, go ahead and ask, since I should still remember pretty much the entire solution (I wasn't particularly impressed with the walkthrough I found on the web, so I'll probably end up writing my own). I think the only thing I didn't get was what I was supposed to do with Teb. I don't know if it's properly classified as abandonware though, or if people would be interested in that game.

Edit: Never mind, I realized what you're supposed to say to Teb (hint: it makes him freak out).

Does EVE Online include any first-person simulation-type space combat at all...?

X3 reunion is a pretty good space sim/rpg, the downside is that the game is quite complicated and takes a while to learn
