Did you install from the disk and then convert it to Steam format? That always corrupts the files.

eh... to play halflife you don't really need steam. in fact it is probably better not to have it. especially since i remember you are the one with old computer right?
some new mod versions (such as Day of defeat & new counterstrike) might have problems running on an old computer (i.e. lag). older versions still run good. once you manage to install the game propperly if you can't run the openGL mode (too much lag or problems) i suggest the software mode. the graphics are still very nice. STEAM ---- why the hell did they have to implement it for HL1? no one knwos but probably to test the system before getting the HL2 out. obviously some game version had some glitches. i dont' know the Anthology, but i have another one with the rest of the mods. oh and Blodd-piggy i dont' think donwloading is an option for him since he mentioned he uses 28.k modem. AFAIK mods take at least 100 MB and that is a lot for modem, remember?

How do I run it in software mode? The only way I can seem to run it is to launch it from Steam...
And no, I didn't convert any file formats, I just installed it and that's it.

either way you have some strange problem there with a game that used to work on very slow & old computers. i advise you to search for technical help in either Valve or one of the mod's forums. post your log file and any information you might have gotten. i am sure they could help you. only think i remember is that STEAM was causing a lot of problmes when it came out. before it was so called WON. and i still have the old version(s) of game (WON) and they really work on old computer with no problem. but STEAM, i dont' know much about it. only that they basically (ab)used the Half-life 1 to test it, so they could later use it in Half-life 2. since they were just testing it there were many flaws. Well like i said search for official help. Since they are selling the game they MUST provide it to you and also MUST solve the problem you encountered. and i am sure they will.

I'm really glad you guys are helping me so much!...But i've already started a thread on STEAM forums and gotten technical support at support.steampowered.com.
They sent me a reply: Hello, Please follow the seven steps listed below to troubleshoot your issue. After each step, be sure to reboot your computer and try to run the game. 1. Update all graphics card/motherboard drivers, including your motherboard's BIOS. *NOTE* Be sure you are using the driver removal tool on your video card manufacturer's website to fully remove the old drivers before installing the new one, this step is necessary!** If you are not sure how to update your drivers, please see these knowledge base articles: Title: Updating Video Drivers URL: http://support.steampowered.com/cgi-bin/st...ated=1136400422 Title: Motherboard Information and Drivers URL: http://support.steampowered.com/cgi-bin/st...ated=1093739446 2. Download and install the most up to date version of DirectX. The latest version can be found on Microsoft's DirectX website: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.mspx 3. Download the latest drivers for your sound card. Please visit your soundcard manufacturer's website (ie: http://www.creative.com) to find driver updates that may fix issues with Valve games. If you are using on-board sound through your motherboard, then drivers will be located on your motherboard manufacturer's website. 4. Run Windows Update, located in your Windows Start Menu under "All Programs". You can also run Windows Update by visiting: http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/...t.aspx?ln=en-us 5. If none of the above works, disable the soundcard via device manager and try running the game. Please see this Microsoft Windows article for more information about disabling a device: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310126/ 6. Force Direct3d instead of OpenGL for the video mode, or visa versa. This setting can be changed in the game's "settings" or "options" menu, under "video." 7. Run a full spyware and virus scan of your system. Please see this knowledge base article for instructions and recommendations: Title: Spyware, Adware, and Viruses Interfering with Steam URL: http://support.steampowered.com/cgi-bin/st...ated=1096098438 If none of the above works, please reply to this message and attach the error logs from the game you are attempting to play and an MSINFO32 report. If you are not sure how to create a MSINFO32 report, please see this article: Title: MSINFO32 Reports URL: http://support.steampowered.com/cgi-bin/st...ated=1095979362 If you have any further questions, please let us know. ----- I'm going to try and download a new driver for my video card and see if that helps anything...

Not really. Blue Shift was way too short and didn't offer any new weapons or enemies like Opposing Force did.
I agree. Half-Life, Opposing Forse, Blue Shift, was there ever another one? |
