Hello.

So here is the Problem:

My Instalation of Windows XP (With Service Pack 2, by the way) is now a Hell of a Mess. Sometimes it just quits "Explorer.exe" for no good Reason. Happends since i had to Shut my PC down because it was Hanging.

Anyway, i'm thinking of using the "Repair" function of "The Setup CD" to get it fixed. My Question is: Do you Loose any Data that is an your Hard Drive by using the Repair Function?

I hope not, but i'm not sure...thats why i'm Asking.

I have to get that PC working right Till tomorrow, or i'm Really in Trouble...

"repair funcition" on boot xp cd if you mean that should replace only system files needed for proper run of windows
(i did it few times for myself and it keeped every personal settings including even desktop icons)

Just to explian that a bit more. Repair install repairs and damaged system files and does not reformat your computer. So you dont loose and documents or other important stuff on your hdd.

Take note that System Repair may not always solve the problem.

Also, remember the difference between that and System Rollback... Rollback also affects your directory structure, and can misplace or even erase some of your data.

But it depends on the data. Pure textfiles and such won't be harmed by a system roleback...

But they will be thrown back to the directories they were in ages earlier. I had this kind of a problem several months ago, and am still walking onto files that are in wrong dirs.

Another handy thing to use when XP is having errors is the food old fasion System File Checker.

Go Run>sfc.exe /scannow

This program will require your original windows xp cd in order to properly function. It will scan all your important system files for those that are missing or corrupted and automatically replace them with those on your CD Very useful utility

I used it once with Win95 or 98 and several programs stopped working. <_< For that utility it was the same whether the file is corrupted or it's been replaced by another program which needs that newer version.
