I got a little 2 gig Zen Nano Plus, that's about the size of a lighter. If you cut off the screen of an iPod nano, that's how big my little player is. It's supposed to only hold 1000 songs. the mini is the precedessor to the nano and has either 4 or 6 GB.
And, Danny, the number of songs assumes AAC (Mpeg 4 Audio) encoding in 128KBit.
I use AAC 192KBit.

Are the compressed files still MP3 if so I can reduce the space used on my PSP

Considering they work on mp3 players, I think it would be safe to assume that your PSP can house them. I would go and use it, as it's a great idea, but with 3k+ songs currently on my player, it would be a huge time investment, and I'll get around to it when I cycle to the next 3k set.
