What games are these, exactly?

Gamepads are a relatively new thing in the world of computer games, and most old ones just aren't going to work with them.

You downloaded games from here? Which games?

If they are games from here the first thing to try is using DOSBox. The link there gives you an FAQ to get you started.

Maybe there is a trick... but I never used that with DosBox...
There is a program called JoyToKey, which transform the Joypad clicks in keyboard letter click. I use it playing with consoles emulators and works just fine.
I hope that could help you!
