It wasn't going to be an action version. In fact, LucasArts said themselves if it came out, it would be entirely point and click.

I saw the trailer to the new Sam & Max ages ago when it was first planned, looked really cool and funny, just like the original in that sense. Really does suck that it isn't gonna be made
