The most recent non-beta update for my NVIDIA 460SE (version 1) graphics caused has resulted in only Windows Live Essentials Movie Maker being negatively affected. Namely, it refuses to render any kind of video file - whether the file is being previewed or being transformed into a WMV file. Because of this, I'm forced to use VirtualDub, which has radically changed the way it handles filters. Instead of allowing them to append frames to the beginning or end of a video, their opacity/power can be adjusted over time via a curve editor.

Because of the situation described above, and because I have volunteered to assist with Abandonia YouTube video by recording video footage from games which meet Abandonia's Definition of Abandonware, I would appreciate it if someone could please recommend a good, free Windows-compatible video editor!

If an update has broken Movie Maker, perhaps you should try to solve that. You could try system restore.

If you only need to clip and paste, not modify (add effects etc.), what I use is

With the free version you're stuck with WMV output, but unlike Movie Maker, it gives you full control over resolution, aspect ratio, scaling, stretching, letterboxing, etc. It also allows creating fragments from image files (e.g. Abandonia logo) and pasting them.

Your suggestion acutally reminded me that I have the right to legally obtain a free copy of the Ultimate version of Microsoft Expression Studio 4 via the MSDNAA (Microsoft Developer Network Academic Alliance)! It's not Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premier, but it'll do.

Windows movie maker dont works anymore also for me
