If you have another computer with ~200MHz processor, you should set it up as firewall, between your network and the net. There are couple nice packages out there which will make that old comp act as state of the art firewall. (I'm using IPCop)

If you're creating computer for games, I would not load AV software on it. If you really insist in loading it, the disable active virus scan, and set scheduled runs, once a day or every couple days. This way you will completelly offload computer, and will not suffer from low response time.
Use Ad-Aware in combination with SpyBot to clean ads and spyaware.

There are couple other things you should do, to speed up computer. Get better disk-defragmenter, something like Diskeeper. Also make sure that your page file (virtual memory) is in one segment, and not changing on the fly. (should be about 1.5 times of your working memory)

Also disable all themes and visual effects.

Kerio Personal Firewall is indeed a good one! Thx for the tips. Maybe I'll put some ram from my fast pc in the slower pc. Thx to antivir, the harddisk is not rattling so much anymore, and it's working all a lot faster. Again, thx for the help. k:

Yeah Zonealarm is terrible, it's really only meant for people who don't know much about firewalls but after you start learning more about firewalls, you'll realize how limited zonealarm is.

What's *wrong* with Zonealarm?

I know it doesn't exactly let you at port access settings, but it manages program control quite well imo.

What advantages does Kerio have?

Well for one the recent Zonealarms are very bloated in terms of resouces. Kerio is rule based meaning you can restrict not only the rules and such but prevent certain connects like TCP or UDP for example. More specific than Zonealarm when you really want to protect your computer.

One more thing: WinXP SP2, should I install it or not? Will it make my pc slower? Does it have more pro's than against's?
