I just tried to stress that OUR society is not any better than theirs. Which is sad. Considering what half of the Internet is, I'd say a guy doing a goat is pretty tame. Ok, still not, but hey, they had weird sculptures, we have 4chan, reddit, and the Lord only knows what.

People always have things they like to stay hidden in the depths of the mind. Sculptures like this remind people of such (or similar) things, and since they are visible on exhibition, it's easy to throw dirt at them (and people of that times) to try to put our modern society into the more beneficial light. Better blame them than us, you know.
Not all people have the need to do that, though. But it still throws a bad light, on our modern society incidentally, since the first thing such sculptures remind us of, is something more gross than what they actually meant to be back then.

I don't want to blow your mind people, but Pan is a half-goat. Screwing a goat for him is in no way weirder than doing it with a human.

All your comments is pretty much exactly why I like giffing those old paintings.

Humans have always been weird, squelchy, horny, bizarre and utterly awesome since we first stumbled out of a cave into daylight.

we are just as grubby as we are enlightened and we always have been, and I love it

Yes. Also an half-god representing mischief, deception...

Knowing enough about mythology, I'm not even surprised to see it?
