This is very cool.

I've read that female email correspondence in business is easily spotted because we tend to apologize more and for unnecessary things. We apparently also use more exclamation marks because it is a way of making comments less aggressive - for example,

See you on Friday!
See you on Friday.

The first option makes it look like I'm looking forward to seeing you, even excited. The second could be read into many ways by the recipient, even if it is just a simple factual statement.

This bugs the hell out of me, and I am very conscious of how I write in work emails because of this.
Also, never send me a work email with a smiley if it's official correspondence because I will judge you

I sometimes use the exclamation marks to hide the fact that I don't care.

LOL JK

Dunno about the genre differences, but totally true! I have a friend who never uses periods in informal emails, he separates all his sentences with ellipses (and he's well educated and can write formally). Myself, when I'm familiar enough to use smilies, I very much prefer to use them over improper punctuation. :-P

Just wondering, is English your mate's second language? I've noticed this a bit in informal business correspondence in Europe.

Language is cool

If you mean if he's bilingual, no. If you mean if English is not his first language, yes, it's not. :-P

Anyway he does that in social emails, not business related, I don't think he would even if it were informal. And in Spanish (most of the time, because that's what he's using most of the time).

Also, Chinese use simlies (the oriental kind ^_^) in business emails the first time they write you! At least Chinese girls :D
