doesn't that only affect the number of uses you get per day?

Lay On hands heals LVL*(CHA mod) HP. So, if mod is negative, what - my paladin will cause wounds or he will heal LVL*1 nevertheless? And in Smite Evil you add your CHA mod to attack roll. I couldn't find anything in PHB.

Look at the rulebook under the Paladin class section. If it's not written that the lay on hands ability have a minimum, then yes it can go negative. I play a Paladin myself right now though, and I'm pretty sure the minimum is 1. But I'd check the player book again to be sure if I had to confirm it or not.

What if your character was so hideously ugly that everything he did was super strong because the numbers made no sense?

Huh?

Question about the 2nd edition (the one Baldur's Gate is based on?): According to this D&D FAQ, I get a +1 bonus to THAC0 at two weapon proficiency points spent, and a +3 one at three. But then I don't get any additional THAC0 bonus if I spend more points in that same weapon over 3. So is there a reason to spend more points? Is there also a damage modifier that this FAQ doesn't talk about, or something?

How can you have negative CHA?
Anyway most probable outcomes would be:
-Cant use the spell at all
-Effective CHA = 1 for those spells only
-if the character is cursed or something, at DM's descretion the spell effect may be reversed. Lay on hands becomes Minor Harm, Smite Evil becomes Smite Good as in the skills used by Anti-paladins.

He doesn't have anegative CHA, he has a CHa low enough to invoke a negative modifier. Most numerical values in DnD have a minimum 1, as a paladin laying on healing talent and doing damage with it is not only stupid, but can be a bit of a metagame way for god's tank to deal even more damage

I'm playing Baldur's Gate and I hit far more often with missiles than with hand-to-hand weapons. I'm aware of the THAC0 and AC mechanics as well as the AC modifiers for weapon types (missile, slashing, crushing...), but I still don't think that warrants my experience. My main character's THAC0 is even less with sword than with bow, but against the same enemy he'll miss most times with the sword and hit nearly always with the bow.

The question is whether others who played Baldur's Gate have experienced this, and if there's a reason or a modifier that's documented. I think the question wouldn't be about D&D but about BG in particular.

It doesn't happen in D&D but I have noticed it in BG. A wizard with a sling and a really bad thac0 (like 19) can hit more often than per say a character with a 17 thac0 using a shortsword.

The difference is huge in my experience and I just don't get it, since there's nothing according in D&D AFAIK.

Anyway I forgot to ask about this but I always wondered and Google didn't help. What effect does the Bard's Song have?
