Cool Windows 7

Have any of yall upgraded and how would you compare it to Win XP SP3.
We Know Vista was a pile of KAKA so Im wondering how it compares to my current OS.

I heard that Windows 7 is great. But it is still an upgraded Vista version. Which mean that if your computer is already having trouble to run XP to its full capacity then don't bother: it will never run well.

I don't 'heard' this or that, I already run Win 7 (32 and 64) from the betas and RCs, and now the finalized product, besides XP and Vista.
( ..... And my beloved W98SE of course .... )

Rule of thumb is pretty simple:
If you have or will buy recent hardware with at least 2GB RAM Win7 beats all.
4GB RAM or more: Win7-64.

Older (or not so recent single core hardware) with a 1GB RAM: don't bother: stay away from Win7. (And Vista)

Did MS really had to call it a 'new' OS .....? Kinda doubtful, there are some things improved, but even then, they could have done a major service pack upgrade for Vista users, but yeah, a 'new' OS also means $$$$$$. *sigh*

It's only $$$$$'s if you don't find a keygen or copy a serial number from a boxed copy of Win7 from a shop
I've been doing that for games, recently. But I have had a few attacks of conscience when I think about the excited young boy who takes home a new copy of that game he's been waiting for, installs it - and then is rejected because the CD-key is now a duplicate (lol lolol).

So you do need to be running the 64bit version to use all yr 4gb of ram..?

Damn... That means some games will be screwed.
I'll stick with WinXP until it stops being supported, I reckon.
Unless they make Win7 able to 100% emulate Win95/98 for old games, in which case I may consider getting another HDD and multi-booting.
(Hackintosh with linux terminal and WinXP with a Dos 6.22(7.10) partition )

If it ain't broke, why fix it?

XP ain't broken, but on new hardware the driver support is getting behind.
If you buy a new fast PC it's kinda idiotic to put XP on it.

If it's interesting to upgrade to Win 7 on a four years old PC.... yes, but only if you run Vista now.

Also it depends of course what's the use of your PC, if you want to run the latest games at full speed, go for Win7 64, the recent game engines begin to take full advantage of a 64b OS.

If your PC is mainly meant for 'daily' use (surfing, music, movies ... etcetera) you really don't need 8GB RAM or a 64b OS.

As usual ... it all depends of your personal home PC habits.

(Work PCs are another matter, but then the B.O.S.S. pays the bill, no problem... )

I'd also recommend Windows 7 for the newer PCs, I myself have a fairly new PC and used to have XP but due to some graphics problems I decided to switch to Win7 and I most certainly didn't regret it.

I must say booting the PC seems much faster than XP, and the search feature is something I couldn't live without anymore.

If you're using XP and your computer can handle it, you should upgrade to Windows 7. I think it's a waste for Vista users to upgrade, unless you're having serious problems with it. Vista has always worked fine for me, and the asking price for a glorified service pack is too steep for me. I'll upgrade if I ever get a new computer, but I'm going to try to hold off for when Windows 8 will apparently come out in a couple years.

If Microsoft is going to do this two year cycle BS between operating systems, they really need to lower what has always been a ridiculously high price and stop releasing 5 different versions of the same software with artificial limitations set in place to handicap the product.

I think that I'll only "upgrade" to Win7 when none of any new hardware I buy is supported by XP.
Or when new games that I like stop running on XP.

I had to upgrade to XP from NT years ago, as they stopped supporting it and games didn't like the OS (one reason why Win98 games don't like XP is because it uses NT architecture for things).

If they make it look like XP and not with the Vista look and annoying messages and stuff, I'll do it when I next upgrade my CPU or motherboard.

Apart from that, I don't really see the point atm.
Win7 is available for around £40 for a single license here.

Even if you can shutdown most of those annoying processes, some will always run.
And some are really crappy, if MS absolutely wants to run defrag on a sheduled background base they should build a good defrag program in their OS, not that worthless WinDefrag. And ask if you want that thing to run, not as is now: oblige you to kill that sucker in the sys settings.

Ahwell, whatever, enough rambling and blah blah blah for today, I think I could go on for hours and hours ......

Rambling is all well and good, but Microrot knows you've bought Windows 7, it knows you're using Windows 7 and many other Microrot's products and they don't give a damn about the ramblings since you're using it willingly after all and they cash their income. So all are happy and content, no?
