Personally: I've been quite involved on Ponystars.com, but that's just me
 Try looking under the "Multiplayer" forum, and see who you can find. Maybe post a request for people to join you in whichever game you prefer

I have an account on Playfire, but the only thing I liked there were the quizzes.
