is there a free (small) alternative to M$ word that anyone reccomends?

Open office.. It's open source based (like linux) so it's free.

OpenOffice is indeed nice. Just keep in mind that not everyone uses it, so watch those file formats if you're creating documents for other people. Simply saving from OO into Word format isn't perfect either - you may need to tweak your document to make it look the same, but if you're just creating text documents, there should be no problems.
