Default looking for a nice simple but usefull joystick

After long time using only the keyboard and mouse i am planning to buy a joystick/gamepad/controller (whatever the name is nowadays),

to be able to play games like the ones here at abandonia and also games like this (Avalanche) on my pc.

Any suggestion? what are the details i should look for? I have a pc, intel core 2 duo, 2gb of ram... and windows xp sp2 running.

money is not a problem but I am not looking for the fanciest of all. I am looking rather for something usefull and compatible with almost any game.

thanks

I've not been looking at joysticks lately. But I think you just need to browse around to find one you like. Some console joysticks can be connected to a PC via a USB adapter. This is good for someone like me who plays the PS2/3 a lot and is very used to the controls.

That's not the question... (And those details mean s**t for joysticks)

The question is: USB OR Game Port.

Erm ... I haven't seen a joystick port on new computers in years, unless it came on an add-in sound card. I think it's safe to assume USB in this case.

Some months ago I bought a Logitech Attack3 USB (yes, I'm a cheapass).
Plug in on XP or Vista(32 and 64) and it works with every game that supports a joystick.
Works also fine in dosbox.
Even works fine in Linux+dosbox.

Needs to be installed in W98SE. :/ but works.

Problem: too much buttons.
DAMN I HATE ALL THOSE BUTTONS.
Is it so much asking to have an USB joystick -(and cheap please)- that only has TWO buttons?

In fact I was shopping for a old model for gameport to stick in my ol'P1 as all my ol'joysticks are worn out, but those seems not findable anymore around here.

I HATE MODERN TIMES.
And I hate you all.

You crack me up! :amused:

I know what you mean about the joysticks these days. You can't find a good joystick that has any surface not covered by buttons. I've only had a couple of PC joysticks throughout my life, and never really used them. I got used to driving, fighting and flying with the keyboard and got pretty good with it, too.

So, I did a little search and found this which was what i was having in my mind
I found these two logitech ones being very popular and easy to "plug and play" (both are on USB port)
any other popular brand? or recomendation?

If I am planning to buy a pair is it easy to set the recognition of two gamepads for two players? stupid question?
