I was doing some random search and saw this :
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/...pc/default.mspx Virtual PC 2007 is free, I used the 2004 version, it's quite an effective way to run old OS without dual boot |

Unfortunately, VPC doesn't work under Vista Home Edition (yet). At least it didn't when I looked it up some weeks ago.

I tried it, if you want to run previous versions of Windows it's the way to go, but for DOS nothing comes near DOSBox. Anyway virtualization is a fine way of messing around without actually messing with your real machine.
By the way VPC works fine in many Win versions in which it's not officially "supported".

A word of warning: I run VPC7 and I just found out through the help file that no matter what video card you have, VPC7 will only allow the guest OS to work with a virtual crap card. I other words, VPC7 will completly disregard your actual card and pretend you have a 8MB ram card which will be fine for running Solitude" but not much else.

Virtualization is all about disregarding your real machine and working with a virtual one, you know.

Virtual pcs are very helpful for testing for trojans or malware. Often time I use it to code newer .net applications. Edit: I prefer Virtual pc running a windows 98 system rather than using dosbox to play certain games (ie Abuse). Part of the reason is framerate, the other is the ease of moving the mouse out of the virtual pc without pressing windows key D.

I tried it and it worked worse than VPC for me to emulate Win98 in WinXP. But VPC won't run on a Linux host and VMware will.
