Long story short, I came across this site looking for Dune and I was quite happy to found yet another site (besides The Underdogs) that were heavily into 90's PC gaming.

Anyway, I'm trying to run WC4 on my computer (which is a PIV 2.8Ghz, 2 NTFS HDD) and although I could install the game (by disabling the EMS in the DOSBox.cfg file), I just can't run it. I've try installing it in XP, it did install except for the videos that don't work and there's no sound (and the game just freeze). I've tried going to native DOS but since my HDD are NTFS, no luck running anything from there, so is there a solution to my problem or I will have to find an old P-III and go from there?

First of all have you tried running it in Windows without doing anything? Also where did you get it and did they leave a readme file stating that all movies had been removed?

First, it's the original disks that I had since the game was release so I've played this game (and even finished it) back in the days so I know there's no problem with the movies (gotta love those 5+ CDs games with FMV!).

I did try to run it in Windows without touching any settings and beside the game running and installing smoothly (and extremely fast), nothing else worked.

i.e. I double clicked on the WC4 icon on my desktop, the game starts but the opening movie doesn't play. I hit escape, then I have the two choices (if you remember, you could alter the history by choosing different options during FMV scenes), I select one, I see about a sec of FMV and then everything freezes. I can't even get to the main menu inside the game.

I try editing the compatibility options for the wc4.exe file but to no success.

This reminds me something......are you sure the disc/file is not damaged?

If it was, the installer would probably report an error.

Tried VDMSound? Why don't you want to run it in DosBox?

Best solution to make sure: run a full-range scandisk.

I second idea for VDMSOund.

I do have the game, but unfortunately I have no time to try it. I might try to install it this weekend while doing something for my work.

It is over 8 years since I completed the game on PS, so after I bought the game so I didn't bother trying it.

Thanks for the advices,

well good news VDMSound can indeed run the game from the XP environment. However, I will have to mess around with the settings as I can't seem to use my Thrustmaster joystick to play the game and the sound is kind of ticking when the CD drive is used, but the game runs. I think tweaking will be the only thing I'll have to do.

Thanks again! k:

Edit 1: After messing around a little with the setting, I think I know what's wrong. The game refuses to run unless I check the run low end MSCDEX option which cause VDMSound to detect my DVD Drive as a 1x CD-ROM!! Therefore, the game suffers from it. Any way around that problem? Btw, if I don't click on low end MSCDEX, the game starts with an error message.
