Also, all files will be hosted on free servers such as megaupload[/b]
They delete files not downloaded after 30 days, you know...
(and MegaUpload? That thing sucks; popups and slots for countries)
[/b]
That's the price you may for free file servers. The only other option is to pay for your own hosting. Are you willing to do that?
[/b][/quote]I see your point. Now let me show you why I think RapidShare is better. While it does not have the "resume downloads" capability, it is used by many people because of the following things:
  • Good enough upload and download speed (over 50 kb/s usually for both things)
  • Ability to have collector's account, where you can see what you've uploaded and when the files were last downloaded. Thus, you can see which you need to access to avoid deletion. Also, if people download your files enough times, you can even get a premium account for free!
  • Folders. With them, you can sort your files, and if you're doing something like in the following screenshot with the description, can even see when a file is down, and you do not need to try all of them before.

(notice the "14 x 100 MB" and the "14 files" things? by writing in the description how many files must be in that folder, you can see when one is missing, as the numbers won't be the same)
  • RapidUpload - A software made by RapidShare used for uploading files (to your collector's account also, if you want to).
  • No popups (at least with Firefox), slots of things like that. Of course there is the time limit before you can download a file and the time between downloads which needs to pass, but since nowadays most (not all, most) people have a Dynamic IP, the latter shouldn't be a problem.
Now, what about MegaUpload? Well, it has slots, and that in my opinion is bad. Really bad. For example, only 50 Romanians (yes, 50!) can download at the same time (and think that we are 21.7 milion people in this country). They claim that the slots limit dissapears if you download their toolbar, but that it in my humble opinion would not be a good idea. Also, they state on their site that only with the toolbar one can resume a download. Am I right?

Also premium user can make existing normal links premium, so if by chance there's a RS user with a premium account he/she can help us with making links even better.

Thanks for the information about Rapidshare. I do like many of those features.

However, without resume downloading it can be very difficult to download on dial-up. Believe it or not, that's what I use. It's acceptable though if the files are in 50mb chunks.

Err... 10000 times. Still assuming that you download your files each month to keep them online and that you share lots of files, it's shouldn't take too long. I got 2000 points on Rapidshare.de until they closed it and started rapidshare.com. To get a collector's account, just upload anything. Even a small file will do.

Greetings! Speaking of free upload sites, I also agree that megaupload with its slots would not be a good idea. In fact I've never been able to download anything from megaupload yet because slots are always filled up. (tried hundreds of times for months). And I can't even install their toolbar since I use Linux. Rapidshare would be much better. Besides, in case you don't know, I'd like to tell you one useful thing about rapidshare. There are alternative download sites for rapidshare.com and rapidshare.de (dunno about other countries). They are http://xrapidshare.com/ and http://rapidscare.de. On either of them you can enter a link to a rapidshare hosted file and when 5 people do this, they will mirror the file.
It has the advantage that you don't have to wait for your download to start. Dunno if this allows to resume download, we'll have to find out. There are also other free upload sites like www.filefront.com (haven't tried it) and i've come around some very nice site lately which was fast and didn't have any download limitations etc., but i've forgotten what it was, since i only downloaded from it once.. I'll try to find out what site it was...

p.s. here's a list of free upload sites I found. http://personal.inet.fi/atk/kjh2348fs/ul_sites.html

1$/Gb storage per month? How about the same ratio, but not for month - for ever? =) A new beta service from DreamHost. Needs email to download, though.

Files Forever.

Megaupload has download slots. From my experience, Rapidshare doesn't cause any problems, and due to not using download slots is also always available.
Of course when you download a huge file you'll have to wait a few hours before you can download anything again, but that's minor compared to the problems involved with using Megaupload.
