Nope, I wasn't talking about that. I must be mistaken, doesn't matter. But something somewhere gave me that impression :P

Out of curiosity, how much space does Abandonia have?

On topic: Just make sure those free hostings used are quality ones.. imho it's better to skip a link than to put up a crappy link.

They delete files not downloaded after 30 days, you know...
(and MegaUpload? That thing sucks; popups and slots for countries)

If you have a better idea where to host these files, please share it with the rest of us!

a better upload service: MiHD
just a thought.
if you wanted to use bt for iso distribution as well, make sure they are FAST and RELIABLE Torrents (i am fast getting fed up of torrents that take god-knows-how long so sorry if that comment was a little agressive in how it came across)

Rapidshare is better than megaupload.

What's the average and top sizes of ISO's we're talking about here? I know of couple of places who have around 200-250mb for free, but perhaps that's not enough...

@Kosta:

As Tulac said, RapidShare is good, and with a collector's account, you can also make it download files itself from other sites. The upload and download speed is pretty big for me, but that might be because I'm not living too far from Germany.

Edit: I've looked over MiHD. Don't know it's speed, but the file deletion time is 60 days, which is very good. (RS: 45 days; MU: 30, I think)

That's the price you may for free file servers. The only other option is to pay for your own hosting. Are you willing to do that?

Rapidshare doesn't have resume downloading for non-premium users. In spite of how much I've heard megaupload trashed in the past, it's been very reliable. Some of the ISOs listed above have been hosted with them for over two months. Yes, I went out of my way to access them every 20 days or so to make sure they'd stay online. Unfortunately we lost Crime Patrol (I guess I must have lapsed on that one).

There really is no average. If a free file server is used, it will generally have to be split into parts.

Everyone should keep in mind that this listing is not going to be limited to ISOs hosted on free file servers. You might as well break your mind of that idea right now, because that's only going to make up roughly %25 of it. This listing is a patchwork quilt. I've already run something similar for a couple months, and it worked extremely well. Personally, I have no interest in cd-rips, but I do have a great interest in seeing these games preserved as they were originally sold or released.

You may even think this listing will lack integrity, but every problem on the listing will be dealt with (as I've done in the past off Abandonia). We really only need the subforum to address technical problems, requests, and coordinating hosting.

Just as Kosta said, this will not take away from the VIP section. It will run separately from it. Nevertheless, I think Kosta is going to make arrangments to download a copy of the ISOs provided in the listing.

Then there's the issue of the sites/servers involved: For Ab to link to a site/server, then that site cannot offer warez, or else it would be a breach of Ab's policy, right? [/b]
If that's a breach of Ab's policy then it looks like those sites cannot be linked to. I know of a couple of those sites. They have several ISOs, but not all of them are abandonware.

Dunno. Personally, I think that it would be much more handy to use Bit Torrent like proposed in the P2P thread.
[/b]
In my experience Bit Torrent hasn't been terribly reliable for this kind of project, but there's no reason why a torrent couldn't be provided in the listing as well (as a mirror).

What is the upload limit for http://mihd.net/ ? The site doesn't seem to say. Besides that, it looks good.

This forum would not be visible to users that have less than a certain number of posts. This number is yet to be discussed. Also, all files will be hosted on free servers such as megaupload, while the resumable high speed downloads from the abandonia server will be reserved for VIP users, as it was the case until now. I hope that answers the uncertainties so far.
[/b]
After some thought I'm not sure I'm too keen on the idea of limiting the subforum to users that have a certain number of posts. This would prevent people that have helped in the past to participate. Also, some of the best uploaders, post the least, or not at all.

Something else that wasn't mentioned is how additions will be made. Discussion about possible additions should be open, but posting links outright should be forbidden. Checks obviously have to be made first. Preapproved submissions with links will need to be sent to me or anyone in control of the list (which will likely amount to a locked sticky thread). Everyone will receive credit for any link or upload that's used.

Any other questions or concerns?
