I think we've all experienced it once, we eagerly await a game, follow its progress, fall in love with its graphics, or its story. Oftentimes this game is already in a later stage of production and a trailer has been released, or even sometimes a demo... which makes it all the more disappointing when the game is cancelled.
So here is my question: what is your most disappointing game cancellation? Here are two of mine: Sam & max 2 Freelance Police Aside from being sequel to one of the best adventuregames (and comics) it also looked great. Sure it wasn't 3D, but for once even the ever-so-critical adventurefans didn't seem to mind. The graphics from the original game were loyally reproduced. Quite a few screenshots were released, alongside a trailer and around 4 smaller movies. It was, of coarse, cancelled. But what really made this cancellation disappointing was the fact that there is always a small strand of hope for the game. Be it that Bad Brain Entertainment promised to continue the production, only for the legal discussions to fall through at the very last moment. Or the even more flimsy hope of Steve Purcell (creator of Sam & Max who supposedly regained control of the Sam & Max license) pulling it all back together (a hope based on one single interview, sadly) Next, the sequel to a game featured in an abandonia competition: Outcast 2 The original one was a brilliant game, some may argue that statement but that is what I think, it's plot (while in retrospect cliché) was brilliant thanks to it's cinematic approach. So one could only feel joy when Appeal announced work on Outcast 2, alongside screenshots which were ahead of its time. Sadly that too was cancelled, and in this case there is not even half a strand of hope.

I agree with Sam & Max 2. That would have been the comeback of the adventure games.
Most off the Game cancellations didnt dissappoint me,but im scared that some one will cancel the Duke Nukem Forever project. |

This may sound kinda stupid, but what about the new Full Throttle? It didn't come out at all, right?

It was cancelled at around the same time as Sam & max, but in this case they did state the reason: low product quality. Still, with a waning number of adventuregames it was a bit of a let down... good thing adventuregames are regaining popularity little by little. <!--QuoteBegin-Toxik i would say fallout 3..but its all like-now theyre making on it,then its cancelled, then somebody else is making on it.[/quote] At the moment Bethesda is working on it, yet there hasn't been any news since the announcement (most of Bethesda's PR is geared towards TESIV: Oblivion I guess. Another sad event was when Looking Glass Studios (developper of Thief and System Shock) went belly up... alongside most of its projects.

Planescape: Torment 2. Yes, it actually was scheduled and work began on it, before Interplay pulled the team to place them on TORN. Then, of course, TORN got cancelled, and the entire team was fired.
Barring PS:T2, I'd go with the second Sam & Max title, and the shelving of Master of Magic II. |
