Cool. What about the mirroring? I could post the English version here and so Abandonians could access it directly, plus the Opera blog service isn't five-stars, plus if the pages got destroyed there for some reason I'd have a backup and wouldn't have to translate it again.

It's pretty simple in fact, they must replace the paths by
c:\users\your_name\
If you look closer at the address bar you'll see that I have DOSBox (and games) installed in the shared documents, so I can use change .conf files and all from my everyday limited account. I was tempted to add a tip about putting everything there in case, but I realized that I couldn't put a tutorial about Windows and security in a tutorial about running old games, or else it would be too long and everyone would stop reading. For XP I'd recommend using a limited account and putting all this in the shared or personal documents, but I can't do it here. So I don't mention it and the people who run XP as admin won't have problems, and those who don't will hopefully know what to do. I used the "c:\oldgames" path for simplicity and consistency with Horseman's tutorial.

But the problem is that I don't know Vista. I don't know how UAC works, and so I don't know if this will work with the default out-of-the-box setup as it does with XP.

So please tell me how's a default Vista installation. Does Vista come with only one visible account like XP? What's the default status of that account (admin or something new that doesn't exist in XP or what)? Will in that account, without elevating or downgrading its status, any action beyond limited rights trigger a UAC popup (if UAC is enabled by default as I think it is)?

It's a little bit more complicated than you seem to think.
You make the same mistake as plenty peeps who change from XP to Vista.
Vista protects much more the C:\ root, c:\program files\ c:\windows and system folders.

For example, when running dosbox installed in c:\program files, you will only be able to take screenshots when running dosbox as FULL administrator, otherwise Vista will refuse access to the c:\program files\dosbox x.xx\capture folder. Heck you even can't edit and then save dosboxconfig in \program files\ if you're not running as full administrator .... think about that.
And when you also know that there are much more levels of administrator under Vista then under XP .... you get the point.
Many who think they run with full rights in Vista suddenly realize they aren't as much admin as they thought. And programs refuse to do what they are supposed to do, or better said: Vista refuses those programs access to certain folders.

Basicly: forget the idea that Vista is some kind of a bit more restrictive XP, you're wrong. It leans more to security a la Linux or Unix based systems, whilst XP had still the old W98 style of securising (or non existing), and the security in XP was easily avoided.
And honnestly said, it was about time that the security levels became stricter.
It's not for nothing that Linux or Unix based systems are regarded to as much more secure then Windows.

So to conclude, (it's 01.00 here), in stead of trying to avoid all the securities, again, simply work in c:\users\your_name, as it was meant, or in another partition then your C:\ , and suddenly all the so called Vista related problems vanishes.

Afterall, none on Linux, Unix or even Mac( Mac?, did I really mentioned Mac? must be really late) would even dream to cluther up the root of their system with all kinds programs and folders.

Even D-fend reloaded has a Vista option, does the same, installs and works in \users\your_name\

Thanks for the kind words.

Okay thanks DR. Anyway what I need to know is, what worked with a defalt XP setup won't work with a default Vista one. So I guess the advantages of avoiding problems in Vista (and XP limited users) outweights the disadvantages of adding another paragraph.

(Not that putting stuff in the root is more advisable in XP than in Vista... And a XP limited user wouldn't be able either to take screenshots in \program files\... but let us keep this topic focused on the tutorials.)

Sorry I was very busy today, I'll do this when I can. I'll replace my first post here with the table of contents, and I think I'll post each tutorial as a separate thread--which could be closed so they don't clutter and all questions and comments about the tutorials are centralized here.

Done. Let me know if there are errors, links outside of Abandonia etc.

I see Russ posted in the middle of the advanced tutorial, I was forced to split it into two posts because you can't put more than 10 images in one post. :P Russ if you could move your post here...[done]

Russ's idea of a tutorials subforum could be a solution. In the other site where I posted this in Spanish I couldn't organize the boards and it's the only tutorial there is, so what I did was sticking the table of contents, and closing the other topics, so they get buried and out of the way eventually but are linked from the table of contents.

I finally got myself to update the advanced tutorial for the newer versions of DOSBox, that work well with Windows permissions. I've also corrected some bits in the basic and configuration options tutorials, about graphics were I had some things wrong.

Some screenshots may not make sense for a while, because it takes some time for PhotoBucket.com to replace or delete files. I think from previous experience that it should be OK by tomorrow.

The Spanish versions in the my.opera.com mirror aren't updated yet (but the English versions there are).
