Default Chaos Overlords problem

I changed chaos overlords to a small screen, and the graphics white screen in game making it impossible to play. But when I set the client to full screen, it does not change to full screen when i reopen the client. How do I sort out this bug? Could someone please help me as I love this game and am very anxious to play this classic again.

First of all, this topic belongs in Troubleshooting and not iin Offers.

Second, by "client" do you mean DOSBox?

Main site lists DOSBox under compatibility.

Main site is wrong. Windows only. (W9x game)

BTW, I even wouldn't bother running this one directly in a modern OS, as it runs really good in VPC2007/W98SE.

You also avoid all kinds of driver/hardware incompabilities that way.

You probably can't without modding or using a simulator or something like that. FYI, some old games froze or stopped working when switching from fullscreen to another application or when being minimized... That's just how it worked back then. There was no such thing as 100% compatibility, and most of the time you were simply happy that it worked.

I remember I used to reboot about every 4-8 hours on my old Win98SE machine... Else it was a sure crash.

I know this thread is old, but I'm posting this for future reference.

Sometimes, changing the options within the game won't work. However, if you edit the registry file included in the zip file downloaded from this website (right-click -> edit) and then merge it with the registry, it'll work, so long as the "AppPath" is where you've installed Chaos Overlords. You can also edit the registry directly using regedit and going to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Stick Man Games\Chaos Overlords.

Here's what the registry file looks like:
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Stick Man Games]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Stick Man Games\Chaos Overlords]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Stick Man Games\Chaos Overlords\1.0]
"prefsVidDeep"=dword:00000001
"prefsSlide"=dword:00000001
"prefsBaseStats"=dword:00000000
"prefsCombat"=dword:00000001
"prefsFreeGang"=dword:00000001
"commType"=dword:00000000
"prefsVolumeSFX"=dword:00000000
"prefsVolumeCD"=dword:00000000
"prefsDiff"=dword:00000000
"prefsTimeLimit"=dword:00000000
"prefsObjective"=dword:00000004
"prefsFullScreen"=dword:00000001
"serialNum"=dword:1c962015
"AppPath"="C:\\Chaos"

You should only need to change the last digit for each one. It's fairly self-explanatory what each one does.

For example, to set the game to run in Full Screen mode, set the "prefsFullScreen" dword value to 00000001. To run in a window, set it to 00000000. Don't forget to save it and then double-click it to merge it into the registry.

Chaos Overlords was designed to run in 16-bit. If you run it in a higher color depth, some of the graphics just show up as white squares like the OP had. You can either run the game in full-screen, which changes the color-depth automatically to 16-bit, or, if you're like me and want to run the game in a window, you can just change the color-depth. There's a neat program here: http://www.12noon.com/displaychanger.htm that I used to create a shortcut that automatically changes the color-depth when I start/exit CO.

Hope this helps someone who wants to rediscover this classic game ^^
