What's the difference between the Myst series and the Uru series?

Except for one being realtime 3D and the other one prerendered?
The story I guess.

I'm not sure but I think Uru takes place in the present while the Myst games take place a long time ago.

In the Myst games it is Atrus that has taken the task upon himself to restore the D'ni empire, while in Uru you see a modern cooperation is trying to restore D'ni (D'ni Restoration Council) and, while Myst gives a rather idealized view of the D'ni civilization... Uru shows the player the true D'ni empire and its (not so pretty) history (slavery, immense greed...)
The Myst games don't really handle the D'ni empire itself, mostly Atrus and his family.

Which one is generally considered better, Myst or Uru?

I don't know what the fans prefer, I like all the games because they are so pretty but I enjoyed playing Myst III and IV more than Uru simply because Uru was simply so... lifeless (in the other Myst games you could at least interact with some animals)

The feeling I got in uru was simply... unsettling, in Myst you know you'll be alone most of the time, but in Uru you see offices of archeologists, you find journals, security cones and at one point you even hear sound of people sitting in a bar talking and laughing... but you don't see anybody (I think you see a total of two characters in the game, 3 if you count yourself) This didn't blend in well with the setting.

I believe the next Myst game (Myst V), which will also be the last Myst game, will be in 3D like Uru.

I recently bought Myst 1, 2 & 3 for ~ €24. When I get the time I'll sink my teeth into them.

I personally like Myst 3 most out of the first 3 because it is more story-driven than the others.

I remember I loved Myst (the first) for it's atmosphere. The second Myst, Riven, I never finished. I got tired of switching CD's LOL

i had a 3d version of the original myst "real myst" it was a lot better looking than the original.

i cant seem to get a copy of riven, but i heard the puzzles are annoying.

ive got myst 3, and i quite like the static screen, that still pans around 360 degrees, with movies added in. its not as pretty but there ya go.

Riven, I admit, was the most difficult Myst game (fans of Myst agree aswell) even with a walkthrough I only managed to beat it once. That is why i prefer the newer Myst-games which are more story-driven... I was actually sad when Myst III ended.

Riven was made even more difficult by the fact that you often didn't know is something was a puzzle, a hint, or just eye-candy.

As for Real-Myst, I only played the demo, i never found the game in a store. The graphics in the original Myst were bad since they made it with one of the least advanced modelers/renderers: Bryce.

I remember we got the original Myst when it came out, and I personally didn't think of the graphics as 'bad' , though... They didn't do any wrong in the overall atmosphere of the game.
Of course I never played 'real Myst'...
EDIT:...Or the masterpiece editon.
