Because Non-Steam old Valve games are practically abandoned by Valve, and not only that, it has no protection whatsoever (Steam's VAC protected servers are tight as a button, so hacks are nearly impossible) so anyone can hack without any obstruction.

About steam. I installed illegal copy of HL2 back in the days and I really enjoyed the game. Now I don't have it anymore, but I am completely honest by saying that I would have bought HL2 if it didn't have steam. I will never agree to buy any games that have somekind of steam variant required to play. It is mistreatment of customer and the faulty is the piracy. Pirates must pay, not the customers.

Is there any way i could play Team fortress Classic the first game the second game is free with Half life 2 episode 2 with Portal ( "Narbacular Drop" by team "Nuclear Monkey Software." ) download on the web site. I do not want to buy Half life 1 also i only got 56k modem. What is this steam thing.

Steam is a application is where you need it to play all valve games now. An active internet connection is required (broadband recomended). You can get Team Fortress Classic if you have a cd-key from:

-Counter Strike 1.6
-Half Life
-Blue Shift
-Opposing Forces
-Day of Defeat 1.3

Oh, and dude, before you get completely set on getting Team Fortress off of Steam, you should know that Steam is one of (if not the) worst services in the history of the world.

i wholly agree with you there Iowa. i don't condone piracy on here but any valve game that needs steam needs to be cracked/downloaded for best results. any game that doesn't use it, just don't download steam.
