Try this site out for any patch that might make things work for you:
http://www.nma-fallout.com/
I found that I get a lot of fanmade patches from there that makes the game run on XP any version

Yeah, I have trouble running Fallout under SP2, I solved the problem by using DOSBox to run it. It runs at a reasonable speed on my 2.5 Ghz processer (no slow-down in the game itself, though modest loading gaps).

Well I just installed Fallout2 because I wanted to play that as well and I found that I can play it XP SP2, but not using any of the fanmade patches. So with Fallout 1 you can do the same but keep screen res to about 800x600 and 16bit graphics. Compatibility on Windows 95 and don't use fanmade patches. Stick to the official updates.

Personally, I've been pretty annoyed with this kind of things. So I went and installed a vintage 2.1 GB HDD into my Sempron 2500+ -based computer. Works like a charm.

Too bad companies don't see that their old games still have playability if they just take the effort to port it over to new OS...

It's not companies, it's Microsoft who have screwed over the backwards compatibility of their OS.

True... but then in any case both M$ and the game companies should work together about this

Only think i had to do to install the game is change the compatibly on the file "setup.exe" on the cd to "Windows 95"
Then i installed the game, and it works flawslessly.

This was the first thing I had to resort whe ntrying to play Fallout1.
The odd thing is that Fallout CANNOT be installed in any way without doing this on XP SP2.
Atleast for me.
